KATHMANDU, Feb 13: Mohit Acharya, at 23, is an actor, singer and now a restaurateur. Two days old Bricks Café located in Kupondole (opposite Hotel Himalaya) is his new venture with his partner Shiva Aryal.

Son of Hari Bansha Acharya, one of the famous duo, MaHa Jodi, Mohit confides that he wants to do something different, and the restaurant business was his way of doing things and relaying his messages.

Republica caught up with Mohit for an interview in the bright sunny garden of Bricks Café.

Why did you choose to operate a restaurant?

Restaurants in Kathmandu are more focused on different kinds of food, like Italian, Vietnamese, Japanese, etc. But I wanted to do something different. I always wanted to be in the hospitality business, and hence, I’m studying Tourism and Management at Indira Gandhi Open University at the moment.

Bricks Café is a café which will reflect Nepali culture. The building we are in is 100 years old and I want people to see what Nepali culture was like back in the past.

When I came to this place, I got to know so many new things about my own culture and being Nepali. I want people who come to the café to know about this as well help preserve and renovate old buildings and not demolish them.

This building was in a very sad state when we rented it. But now, after renovation, I’m very happy with the outcome and I hope people will enjoy the environment with good foods offered here.

What’s happening to your acting and singing career?

I acted along with my dad in many serials like “Madan Bahadur, Hari Bahadur” and “Ama,” amongst many others and I have one album up my sleeve titled “One Sided Love” which I released two years ago.

I’ll continue with my acting and singing but at the moment, I want to focus on the restaurant because I really want people to get the message of preserving old Nepali buildings and culture as a whole. Everybody has a side business, and this happens to be mine (laughs). After this venture starts running on its own, I can then focus on my other careers.

What’s your future plan?

There are a few future plans with my partner, but I can’t discuss them at the moment. When the time comes, everybody will know. Also, I’m currently doing my Bachelor’s and although I can’t say when, I would like to continue my education in the hospitality sector.

Your message to the youth in Nepal?

My message to youth, particularly those who are abroad at the moment, is to ask them to come back home. There are lots of opportunities in Nepal too, but we just haven’t realized it. Also, youth today shouldn’t be ashamed of doing something you would do abroad. For example, someone who would mop floors abroad would not mop his own house in Nepal.

Life is definitely difficult outside and this is home. I just want everyone to work hard and achieve what they want in life. As long as you’re happy, you don’t need to be ashamed of what you do.
