Tension runs high at Tanahun jail

REPUBLICA

TANAHUN, Feb 15: Inmates have beaten up the canteen owner in the Tanahun district jail Tuesday, accusing him of indiscriminately charging for foods.

Dipak BK, the canteen owner, has sustained injuries on the nose, back and limbs in the the beating.

Inmates Nabin Shrestha and Kisan Gurung thrashed BK,saying the canteen owner fixed unreasonably high prices on tea and snacks and that he used to turn violent when not complied with the pricing.

Both Shrestha and Gurung, serving time for drugs trafficking, were had been transferred to the prison four months ago.

Inmates at the prison also chanted slogans against the inmate leader, Prem Pariyar, and the jail administration. They have demanded Pariyar be replaced as their leader.

Pariyar has, however, said the row has nothing to do with the food pricing. He maintained that the incident happened after the jail administration started strictly regulating use of medical drugs the inmates had been abusing for addiction.
