  SPORTS BRIEFS: Nepal one spot up in FIFA rankings  


KATHMANDU, Feb 15: Nepal has moved one spot up to 152nd position in the FIFA rankings published on Wednesday for the month of February. With the ranking, Nepal, which collected 144 points continued to remain on top spot among South Asian country.

India which climbed four spot above in ranking table is in 153rd position, one spot below Nepal. Bangladesh also moved one spot up to 157 while Afghanistan dropped one spot below to 178th position.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka dropped two spots below to 181st and 182nd places respectively. Bhutan is in 201st spot among 205 member nations of FIFA. Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Uruguay and England hold the top five positions respectively.

Rohit Chand joins training

KATHMANDU: National football team´s defender Rohit Chand has arrived home to join the closed camp training of the national team. Nepali team is slated to compete in the finals of AFC Challenge Cup to be held in the capital from March 8-19.

Chand, professional football player of I-League for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), has joined training from Wednesday. Chand arrived home on Tuesday after I-League was stalled in India to prepare for the Challenge Cup.

LRI, Shuvatara into quarters

KATHMANDU: LRI and Shuvatara School on Wednesday advanced into senior boys´ quarterfinal in the 12th Wilson Hoops Inter School Basketball Tournament. Nikesh Rai´s 37 points guided LRI to a comfortable 92-32 win over Mid Land School while Shuvatara defeated KISC 51-37 with 22 points from Tenzing Sherpa. In senior girls´ section, Teresa registered 35-32 win over Pennwood, British School overcame host Wilson 16-10, Shridiwa beat NOBS 23-13 and NOBS thumped Wilson 18-11. In junior boys´ section, Wilson saw off Maha Manjushree 42-24, Green Land registered 42-34 win over Alfas and Neric routed HIMS 30-12.

Mahendra Bhawan into semis

KATHMANDU: Mahendra Bhawan registered 32-24 win over New Summit in senior girls´ section on Wednesday and secured semifinal berth in the 10th Gyan Niketan Inter School Basketball Tournament. Upama Pokhrel scored 18 points for the winning team. In senior boys´ category, host Gyan Niketan beat Sagarmatha 39-22, Valley Public overcame Green Land 28-17, Golden Peak thumped Grammar 62-54 and HIMS saw off AIA 71-58. In the junior boys´ category, Odyssey edged past Ullens 23-22 and Swapna Batika registered hard fought 24-23 win over New Castle.

Bageshwar crushes Ringapur

KATHMANDU: Bageshwar Yuva Club of Chapagaun crushed Ringapur Yuva Club of Lele 11-3 on Wednesday in the Sunakothi Cup Open Lalitpur District-wide Football Tournament being held in the capital. Wangel Ghalan and Santosh Tamang completed a hat-trick apiece for the winning side while Rajendra Bohara hit the target twice.

Santosh Maharjan, Samir Bistaand Rajendra Khadgi scored one apiece for Bageshwar. SN Shrestha scored twice and Sagar Dangol added another for Ringapore. In the day´s kick off match, Pragati Yuva Club of Bhainsepati registered a 3-0 win over Kusunti Yuva Club of Kusunti. Bikash Lama, Surendra Basnet and Prasant Thapa achieved target for Pragati.

Neric win twin titles

KATHMANDU: Neric Academy on Wednesday clinched senior and junior boys´ basketball titles of the Second Innovative Inter-school Basketball Tournament held on the capital. Senior girls´ title went to Gyanodaya. Neric defeated host teams in both senior and junior boys final. In the senior´s title clash Neric edged past host Innovative 48-29. Sagar Basnet contributed 15 points for winning side. In junior final, Avishek Thapa netted 10 points in Neric´s convincing 31-14 win over the host. In girls title decider, Gyanodaya defeated Mahendra Bhawan 31-26.

Pasang Khandu Sherpa netted 16 points for winning side. Neric´s Ankit Bhandari in senior boys, Promis Sherpa in junior boys and Gautami Bhattachan of Gyanodaya in girls´ categories were declared the most valuable players. Ajay Kunwar of host, Ajib Rokaya of Innovative and Pasang Khandu Sherpa of Gyanodaya got the best three pointer award in senior and junior boys´ and girls sections respectively.
