  SPORTS BRIEFS: Innovative, Neric into finals  


KATHMANDU, Feb 14: Host Innovative and Neric Academy on Tuesday advanced into the final of the Second Innovative Inter-school Basketball Tournament in both senior and junior boys´ categories. In the girls´ category, Gyanodaya and Mahendra Bhawan won their respective matches to set up a final showdown.

Alfas, Siddhartha enter quarters

KATHMANDU: Alfas School and Siddhartha Vanasthali entered the quarterfinals of the 12th Wilson Hoops Inter-school Basketball Tournament in the senior boys´ category on Tuesday. Shuvatara also emerged victorious in another match. In the senior girls´ section, Sridiwa beat The British School 22-18, while in the junior boys´ section, Neric saw off Greenfield 30-22.

VS Niketan starts with win

KATHMANDU: VS Niketan started the 10th Gyan Niketan Inter-school Basketball Tournament with a win in the senior boys´ category on Tuesday. VS Niketan defeated host Gyan Niketan B 54-45 in the extra period. In the girls´ section, Mahendra Bhawan, Innovative and Teresa Academy registered wins. In the junior boys´ category, VS Niketan and Awareness International Academy won their respective matches.

Wins for Gupteshwar, Samrat

KATHMANDU: Gupteshwar Youth Club of Bhardevi defeated Vinayak Youth Club, Sunakothi 2-0 on Tuesday in the Sunakothi Cup Open Lalitpur District-wide Football Tournament being held in the capital. Prakash Magar and Anish Shrestha scored a goal each for the winning team. In another match, Samrat Youth Club of Dhapakhel registered a 2-1 victory over Youth Step Yuva Club, Imadol in extra time.

Top seeds suffer shock defeats

KATHMANDU: Top-seeded chess players suffered unexpected defeats in the second and third rounds of the NECOS All Nepal FIDE Rating Chess Tournament on Tuesday. Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali was defeated by Dirgha Raj Joshi from Kailali while FIDE Master Bilam Lal Shrestha suffered defeat at the hands of Chuna Mani Bhattarai. Likewise, Basanta Rawal thumped former Nepal champion Sur Bir Lama while Lekh Bahadur Thapa from Baglung overcame Rijendra Raj Bhandari.

Former Nepal champion Keshav Shrestha leads the tournament with three points along with Prem Krishna Maharjan, Rajendra Prasad Shrestha, Bhagawati Prasad Sharma, Rajan Puri, Niraj Niraula, Bishwa Bijay Ghimire, Madan Krishna Kayastha, Basanta Rawal, Dirgha Raj Joshi, Lekh Bahadur Thapa, Ganesh Man Duwal and Chuna Mani Bhattarai.
