Budget has discouraged handicraft entrepreneurs: FHAN

KATHMANDU, June 1: Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN) has said that the budget for Fiscal Year 2016/17 has discouraged handicraft entrepreneurs.

Issuing a statement on Wednesday, FHAN said that the budget has failed to address even minimum demands that it had placed before the government. "Handicraft industry is a major contributor to national economy. Handicraft products worth nearly Rs 10 billion are exported every year. However, the budget has not introduced any programs and projects to promote Nepali handicraft products and the industry," the statement added.
Similarly, FHAN also said that the budget has failed to bring programs to increase industrial production. It criticized the government for its failure to introduce subsidy for handicraft industries and exporters.

The federation also said the budget did not bring any program for construction of SAARC-level Handicraft Development Sector even though the Ministry of Industry (MoI) has already provided land to construct building of the center.
